South-west of Siena there is a fortified medieval tower, built to protect the nearby mills and mines in these ore-rich hills. Today you can stay in one of four apartments in this stone tower and enjoy the same long-reaching views that medieval warriors once scoured for approaching hordes. Tower 1 is the ground-floor apartment, carved out of the with enormously thick walls that form the base of this tall tower, cool and shaded in any weather.
Outside there are shaded spots to relax in the lawn behind the tower, and there is also a communal loggia with a shared living room with a Nespresso coffee machine and a library. There is no swimming pool here but the nearby river Merse has some great spots for wild swimming, you can even reach them with a walk through the woods behind the tower. For more details have a look here: Wild swimming in the Merse.
The tiny village of Stigliano has its own restaurant, just a short distance from the tower, an easy stroll in the evening.
Stigliano: Tower One is listed under the following categories:
Tower 1 is at the very base of the tower, and has incredibly thick walls, the rooms carved out of the strong buttressing required to support the stone watchtower. There are two entrances, one a direct entrance the other via a door from the flight of steps that climb the entire tower.
Upon entering from the steps, you descend a few steps into a large living room with a kitchen - if coming in from directly you would climb a few steps to enter. Next to the living room you'll find a double bedroom with a large showerroom. The thick walls pierced by three thin windows designed for defendants in the tower to fire arrows through. Today they provide a beautiful gentle light to the whole room.
The history of Poggiarello reaches back at least as far as Etruscan times, shown by the remains of walled enclosures on the nearby hill of "Poggio di Siena Vecchia". The landscape around the tower is rich in castles, convents, hill villages and places to explore.
One senses the long history all around in this quiet, peaceful hamlet. There is a good restaurant a short walk away in the village below.
There are some wonderful walks straight from the tower - you can walk a loop to the "Castiglion che Dio sol sa" (The Castle that only God knows) in a couple of hours. Or a 20 minute walk will take to the ex-convent of Torri, with one of the most beautiful cloisters I have ever seen.
Siena is only a 20 minute drive away, while the Crete Senesi and the Val d'Orcia are only a little further. San Gimignano is less than an hour's drive away, as are the Chianti hills.
