Stalla occupies the ground floor of the main farmhouse on an estate that once supplied the Abbey of St. Mary at Badia Agnano - a Benedictine monastery that controlled vast holdings across the Valdambra valley from the 11th century until 1652. The name gives it away: stalla means stable, and this is where the farm's livestock would have been housed. Now it's a comfortable apartment for families, with a large kitchen and dining table seating 8.
When the entire Valdambra estate is booked together (all three apartments: Stalla, Arcata, and Pagliaio), Stalla becomes the communal dining space for the whole group. The kitchen is large enough to actually work for cooking together, and the table seats 8 comfortably - meaning groups of 12-16 can eat together without feeling cramped, with people rotating through in shifts or spreading across the outdoor patios. This setup works exceptionally well for multi-family gatherings, reunions, or groups who want to cook and eat together while maintaining separate sleeping quarters.
Annemarie, the British owner who lives upstairs with her family, is mentioned in every review for her helpfulness - restaurant bookings, cooking class arrangements, bike rentals, horseback riding, and general local knowledge. One family who stayed in 2018 had previously stayed in an Invitation to Tuscany property 30 years earlier with their own parents - and brought their children back to Stalla.
The estate has exclusive use of the 7x15 meter salt-water pool when booked as a whole, or shares it among the three apartments when booked individually. Hammocks are strung between olive and walnut trees, each apartment has its own private outdoor dining area, and the Valdambra valley between Arezzo and Siena is excellent for cycling and walking.
Stalla is listed under the following categories:
Stalla has two entrances - one from the pool side leading directly into the kitchen/dining area, and one from the side garden leading into the sitting room. This works well for families: muddy children can go straight to the shower via the kitchen entrance while adults relax in the sitting room, or vice versa.
Sitting room: Extension of the dining area with two sofas (can be used as single beds) plus an extra small sofa. Satellite TV, DVD player, CD player/radio, wood stove. Up two steps from this room is the double bedroom with ensuite bathroom (bathtub).
Bathrooms: One ensuite bathroom with bathtub off the double bedroom. One shower room off the sitting area, used by the twin bedroom.
Outdoors: Private furnished patio for outdoor dining. Shared salt-water pool (7m x 15m, depth 1.20-2.20m) with diving board, sun loungers, umbrellas, tables. Hammocks strung in gardens. Shared Weber BBQ. Ping pong table.
The last section of the road is a well-maintained gravel track that gets slightly steep just before the turn off to the house.
Yes. The estate comprises three apartments: Stalla (sleeps 4-6), Arcata (sleeps 2-4), and Pagliaio (sleeps 4-6), for a total of 12-16 people. When booked together, you have exclusive use of the entire property including the pool, and Stalla's large kitchen becomes the communal dining space for the whole group. This works exceptionally well for multi-family holidays, reunions, or groups who want to cook and eat together while maintaining separate sleeping quarters. Contact us for pricing and availability.
The kitchen in Stalla has a proper dining table seating 8 and counter space for actual cooking - not just reheating. When you have 12-16 people on the estate, cooking in one kitchen and eating in shifts or across the various outdoor patios works far better than trying to coordinate meals across three separate kitchens. Groups consistently report this setup works brilliantly.
Once the territory of powerful feudal lords, the fertile valley of the Ambra River lies central to the Florence, Siena and Arezzo triangle; not surprisingly, throughout the Middle Ages it was land to be fought over and frequently traded hands - until the formidable Medici family did away with its influence and relegated it to the role of Florentine breadbasket.
For this the modern tourist can be thankful; the protected land and buildings seen today are not that removed from the Tuscan countryside seen in ancient frescos. There are many good restaurants and lively festivals in the charming towns and villages nearby, and with the famous tips of the triangle - Siena, Arezzo, Florence - all within easy driving distance, Stalla is easily one of the most comfortable and well placed holiday spots you could find.
