Tucked away in rolling Tuscan hills, Guardiolo is a delightfully whimsical “Swiss-style cottage” once built as a folly for a count, now lovingly restored to host up to six guests. Recently listed in the Sunday Times' "30 Best European Villas", it has been lovingly restored and furnished with high quality fixtures and fittings.
Surrounded by evergreen oak woods and vineyards, the house stands as a serene escape - the kind of place where time slows, olive leaves whisper in the breeze and you wake to golden light dancing across ancient stone.
Step inside, and you’re met with a welcoming living room on the first floor, a kitchen and dining room opening to a side terrace designed for al fresco meals in the warm Tuscan glow. Two double bedrooms lie on the ground floor, while the master bedroom and its bathroom grace the top level - all designed to balance the historic character of the house with modern comfort.
Outside, the pool awaits: a generous 12 × 6 metre private swimming pool (depth between 1.2 and 1.7 m) flanked by loungers, umbrellas, and an outdoor charcoal barbecue area with twin fridges and dining tables.
For added comfort, the home features air-conditioning throughout, complimentary WiFi, free parking, and pool towels, bathrobes and slippers included.
The pool is also heatable (advance notice required).
The grounds are fully enclosed and access is via remote-controlled gates.
Guardiolo is listed under the following categories:
The house is set in beautiful evergreen oak woods (Quercus Ilex) in a magical setting.
The accommodation is divided over three floors:
the ground floor has two bedrooms, the middle floor has the large living room, welcoming kitchen and dining room leading to a side terrace for al fresco dining and the top floor has the Master bedroom and bathroom.
On a lower level in front of the house is the swimming pool (7m x 12m) with own indoor shower, sun terrace, loungers and umbrellas. Also by this pool area is the charcoal barbecue area with two fridges and further tables with chairs.
Location-wise, Guardiolo offers the perfect blend of seclusion and access: the village of Forcoli is nearby for simple shops and restaurants, while iconic Tuscan attractions - Pisa and Lucca (30 mins), Florence (just over an hour), and Siena (about an hour-twenty) are all within reach.
For wine-lovers, the famous area of Bolgheri which produces the Super Tuscans is under an hour away, Chianti just an hour. Closer by, the estate that surrounds Guardiolo produce excellent wines too.
The hills that surround Guardiolo are dotted with hill towns, churches and ancient sites - starting with the little village of Palaia with its circular castle at its heart - or a strange temple to 'Minerva Medica' hidden in a nearby forest. For those who love exploring on foot, the area is criss-crossed with footpaths and old, unpaved tracks, often leading to excellent wineries or old castles.
In the hush of vineyard-fringed hills, Guardiolo is both escape and invitation: relax by the pool, breathe in the rolling landscape, and let the rhythms of Tuscany remind you that beauty can be stillness.
