Villa Colombaia 14

Historic Villa for 14 south of Florence : Rignano sull'Arno

Nice little touches

  • This wonderful villa was built as a hunting lodge by an 12th century Florentine family and they still own it today = it really is like staying in a bit of history
  • The owner has some chickens that are kept a little distance from the villa - these are often a big hit with children who love visiting them!

Good to know

  • Because the Villa is close to the town of Rignano sull'Arno, which has a railway station, this is a good choice for a car free holiday.

Villa Colombaia is a historic 17th-century hunting lodge near Florence, offering authentic Tuscan character for up to 14 guests. The villa provides 7 bedrooms (4 doubles, 3 twins) and 5 bathrooms across three elegant floors, with original frescoes, coffered ceilings and period features throughout.

A private fenced pool overlooks rolling hills, while the location just 700m from Rignano sull'Arno's train station makes this ideal for car-free holidays - Florence is an hour away by direct train. The property remains in the hands of the same Florentine family who built it, offering guests a rare chance to experience centuries of history firsthand.

Villa Colombaia is listed under the following categories:

Accommodation

Approaching from the drive the villa's profile stands tall - three broad floors and a dovecote. Facing the best view, the entrances to the villa are located on the southwest and whether one climbs the stately dual staircase or enters through the arched door below it reception is in a spacious entry hall.

To the right of the ground floor hall is the delicately frescoed living room, whose original tiled flooring and pastel landscapes, as well as its lovely piano, have been preserved with care. This room leads directly into an old world study whose broad desk may come to hold a laptop or two, for this room has the best WiFi coverage in the villa. Also off the entry hall is the charming dining room with a table for 10 and a handy 'dumb waiter' that allows dishes to be passed directly from the kitchen pantry. The pantry, which is reached up a few stairs from the entry hall is adjacent to a large country kitchen that provides necessary modern appliances yet, with its corner fireplace and over-the-sink drying rack retains its traditional look. Also on this level, to the left of the staircase to the upper floors, is a guest WC/wet room and a laundry room.

On the first floor, accessed via interior or exterior stairways, is the entry hall with patrician dimensions, a coffered ceiling and furnishings that relate its age, be it a grandfather clock, beautifully glazed ceramics or reminders of the villa's day as a hunting lodge.

To one side of the hall is a double bedroom with stately canopy bed and a brightly tiled ensuite bathroom whose tub allows sitting rather than stretching.

Also on this side of the house is a twin bedroom with an ensuite shower room whose window looks to the trees in the side garden. On the other side of the entry hall is a sitting room that leads to a large double bedroom off of which is a smaller room furnished with a baby bed, the ideal set up for parents wanting to have their young one close by. Adjacent to this suite is another double bedroom with hand-painted bedstead and adjoining small sitting area.

Guests in these double bedrooms will share the large bathroom and additional WC off the wide corridor nearby. A further staircase leads up to the remaining available bedrooms on the second floor - a double bedroom with a small sitting area and two twin bedrooms whose bright painted beams add height to their spacious dimensions. There is one shower room on this level and a sitting room with a TV provided for DVD use only.

As the villa was built to enjoy the pleasures of summer, the outdoors has received its due and there are a number of spots to savour the view and the warmth of the day. Tables are set in the natural shade of trees for meals al fresco, while benches, bistro tables and cushioned chairs invite one to share a cup or a glass and a moment's delight. The fenced swimming pool, approached through flower-draped arbor, sits on a slightly lower level and has room on a side patio and the nearby lawn for sun beds.

“ A special holiday in a special villa ”

The villa is in a great location with stunning views over the Tuscan countryside. The sense of history when you arrive and enter the villa is palpable. It a wonderful property and gave us a genuine feeling of stepping back in time. The villa itself is very spacious - and every room is different. The history of the family is very much in evidence throughout and the current owner, Ilaria, is an exceptionally welcoming host and generous with her time. The pool are is wonderfully located between the villa and the hills and the garden area provides shade and sun. The terrace was a delightful place to spend the early and late evening.

The local town is walkable - although the road is a little rough and steep in parts. Its very quiet but has a supermarket and pizzeria and there are good train lines to Florence in the north and to Arezzo in the south.

A thoroughly enjoyable stay in a truly unique villa.

“ A beautiful family vacation for all ages ”

We were 11 adults from 30 to 68 years of age and 2 boys aged 2 years. we had a fantastic stay and experience. Villa Colombaia is a paradise, beautiful view from all rooms and outside to the soft green hils of Toscana. Despite only 1,5 km from the village Rignano Sull'arno, we felt very private and in the countryside. The house is big but very functional. A very good swimming pool were we stayed much of the time if not in the green shadows at the table by the entrance.

Only 1 km to the bakery were we bought bread and croissant every morning, similar to the tennis court which we also used. Very practical with the train station only 1.5 km away, used the train to visit Florence which is very practical and to and from the airports in Florence, Pisa and Bologna. Only 4 of us came by car from Denmark.

And last and not least a very helpfull and engaged owner Ilaria. She among others things arranged locals Olga and Paulo to come to the house and made dinner for us - the best Pizzas ever tasted.

“ Lovely villa, warm and welcoming host ”

It was a charming glimpse into what it's like to live in a villa that's full of history. Much of the villa has been left the way it's been for generations so there was no heating and our first night was quite cold, but the owner thoughtfully provided plenty of blankets. While the villa's vintage feel took some getting used to, the children in our group of 13 ended up loving it and were sad to leave. We were very appreciative of the owner's warm welcome and constant responsiveness and would only suggest the addition of a clothes dryer so that laundry could be done with more ease.

Just need to note that when we got in touch with Invitation to Tuscany we specifically asked for a villa that would not require a car and we were told Villa Colombaia fit the bill. It does not. There is a long driveway (over 400 meters) with a very steep uphill climb — we had elderly adults in our group (which we also mentioned to Invitation to Tuscany at the planning stage) and they found it difficult to navigate. The villa itself is lovely, but you will definitely need a car if you plan to stay here.

Dear Joanna, while we did tell you previous guests had stayed here with no car, we still always advise clients to hire one even if you don't intend to use it much; Tuscany is a land of hills and unmade tracks so walking can be onerous. But 400 metres is a very short walk in anybody's book! Dan

Around Villa Colombaia

Though the villa is surrounded in greenery, shops, restaurants, and a tennis court are all less than a kilometre away, as is the train station with hourly trains to the center of Florence and a shuttle bus to The Mall outlet shopping center nearby.

If your day trip follows the meandering Arno River northwest, before reaching Florence consider a stop in Fiesole, once an important Etruscan settlement set high above the river valley and by the 14th century dotted with summer villas and impressive gardens of wealthy Florentine families; in fact it was here that Boccaccio's protagonists recounted their tales in the 'Decameron'.

Once in Florence, park under the main station and set out to explore the city centre on foot for its Renaissance palaces, museums, bridges and gardens are all within easy reach.

Heading in the other direction brings you to the heart of the Chianti Classico, where lively market towns celebrate the fruit of the vineyards that surround them.

In a little over an hour there are the picturesque medieval towers of San Gimignano, the great Leonardo's home town of Vinci or the charming town of San Miniato, famous for its white truffles.

And just a bit farther is Florence's historic rival, Siena, a hill city with one of the loveliest piazzas in Tuscany. So many destinations possible and such a welcoming spot to return to - a recipe for the best of holidays.
