Livorno

Tuscany's Coast and Bolgheri, home of SuperTuscan wine

Leghorn, Tuscany's Historic Port

Livorno is a lively mediterranean port often overlooked by tourists, yet well worth a visit.

It has Etruscan origins, and its name is supposedly derived from a type of Roman ship, the "Laburna", but it remained fairly small and unknown for centuries. It was the Medici who decided to transform this small coastal outpost into a port to rival the power of nearby Pisa: Livorno became an enlightened European city and one of the most important ports of the entire Mediterranean Basin. European thinkers moved to Livorno, including figures like Martin Luther, John Calvin, and others. Today it has beautiful fortresses, canals and beaches to visit, as well as wonderful inland areas, including the famous wine-making area around Bolgheri, where SuperTuscan wine was first conceived.
