Fienile 10

Elegant Siena Villa for 10 with Fenced Saltwater Pool and Spa : Siena

Perfect for

  • Families with young children wanting pool safety and convenience: Fenced saltwater pool (12m x 6m, gates can lock) lets parents relax while children play safely. Saltwater system gentler on skin and eyes than chlorine, no harsh chemical smell.
  • Groups wanting private spa luxury near Siena: Your own spa with jacuzzi, Finnish sauna, cascading shower in separate lower-ground building with large glass doors. Professional massages can be arranged on-site.
  • Siena access without Siena prices or crowds: Featured in Sunday Times' 30 best villas for summer. Positioned in green Chianti hills yet remarkably close to Siena. The property sits between historic sites without the tourist intensity. Owner can arrange private visits to museo di contrada (each of Siena's 17 neighborhood museums holds winning Palio banners painted by famous artists, medieval costumes, sacred treasures - usually require local connections). Walk to Torre alle Tolfe for dinner, bus to Siena from San Miniato for Campo/Duomo/museums

Good to know

  • The Spa and Sauna are charged by metered energy consumption
  • Accessibility - surprisingly good for mobility issues: Path connects lower parking area to upper accommodation level (main living/bedrooms), ramps installed where necessary. Not EU-standard wheelchair accessible but works well for people with mobility concerns who can manage gentle ramps. Three bedrooms on ground floor (all ensuite), two upstairs
  • San Miniato suburb (10-minute walk): North of Siena historic center, developed 1970s-80s. Pasticceria for morning pastries, bus stop for Siena center. Not the famous white truffle town of San Miniato (that's between Florence and Pisa), this is Siena's San Miniato neighborhood

Fienile is the perfect villa for a relaxing and luxurious Tuscan holiday - and was recently listed in the Sunday Times - 30 best villas for summer. Set in the green hills of Chianti and within easy distance from Siena, Il Fienile has all the ingredients of classic Tuscan villas plus some luxury extras like the sauna and Jacuzzi.

The furnished poolside terrace stretches the width of the house, with extensive views on all sides. Il Fienile is the perfect house for family reunions, equipped with all the elements that ensure a relaxed comfortable holiday with space enough for everyone. The pool (12m x 6m, depth 1-2.4m) uses a saltwater system rather than chlorine - gentler on skin and eyes, no harsh chemical smell, softer water feel. The pool is fenced with lockable gates, essential for families with young children. Parents can relax knowing the pool area is secure. The fence can be removed if you prefer open space around the pool. The furnished terrace stretches the width of the house with extensive views on all sides. Outdoor lighting around property and in pool means evening swims and long al fresco dinners.

The spa sits in a separate building on the lower ground floor with large glass doors at one end: jacuzzi, Finnish sauna, cascading shower. Professional massages can be arranged on-site. After days exploring Siena's Campo and Duomo, Chianti vineyards, or San Gimignano's towers, you return to proper spa facilities, not just a pool. The spa is charged by metered energy consumption (pay for what you use).

The location gives you genuine convenience rarely found in Chianti: Torre alle Tolfe restaurant sits 500m walk away (medieval organic farm estate, seasonal Tuscan menus, Thursday pizza nights from ancient wood oven on terrace with Chianti views). San Miniato suburb is 10-minute walk (pasticceria for morning pastries, bus stop to Siena center if you don't want to drive). You're positioned in countryside with restaurant walkability.

The owner can arrange private visits to one of Siena's 17 musei di contrada - these neighborhood museums hold winning Palio banners painted by famous artists, medieval costumes, sacred art. Usually requires local connections. Genuine cultural insight into Siena's living medieval tradition beyond the tourist sites.

We have been letting Fienile for a long time and the owner has been constantly renewing and improving the house and the services, it gets better every year!

Accommodation

Main doors from terrace lead into a large living area with comfortable furnishings and dining table for 10. Bright kitchen flanks the living area, also opening to sun terrace and pool. Five bedrooms, all ensuite (unusual luxury for 10-person properties): three ensuite doubles on ground floor, two more ensuite doubles upstairs. Good quality linens, elegant furnishings, mosquito screens in every room. Two doubles can convert to twins on request. AC and heating both included.

When you step out to enjoy the Tuscan sun you will find ample space for activity or relaxation. In the well-tended grounds, there is a terracotta solarium with views of the Chianti countryside and the spacious terrace with sun-beds and a furnished gazebo that overlooks the pool. Outdoor lighting around the property and in the pool mean you can linger over al fresco dinners and continue to splash until you tire; the pool is safely fenced but, should you prefer, the fence can be removed to give more space around the pool. Just below the house is a home spa, with jacuzzi, sauna and cascading shower that all guarantee you arrive at the end of the day relaxed. And just to make sure, on request, the owner can organize a professional massage on-site.

“ A great house for families or friends ”

This is a great house for families or friends. Each room is large and has its own ensuite. There is a large family area and a fully equipped kitchen. The outdoor patio and pool are large and great for your group. The property is located near Siena but you don't know it. You're surrounded by the rolling hills of Tuscany, with views of vineyards, olive trees and cypress trees. Beautiful. Highly recommend.

“ Great Villa in Tuscany ”

We just spent a week at the villa Fienile and it was the perfect house for our family (or for couples). The house is located near Siena but you don't know it. The house is surrounded by the incredible rolling hills of Tuscany - vineyards, olive trees and cypress trees. Classic Tuscany, and beautiful. The bedrooms are large and offer plenty of space, and each has its own ensuite bathroom. There is also a large living space for the group, when you're not outside enjoying the pool and patio, The kitchen was also fully equipped should you decide to cook. The host was very responsive and helpful. We can't wait to return!

“ Excellent Villa ”

Stayed in the villa for a week with our family of 10. For starters, Laura with Invitation for Tuscany was extraordinary helpful responding to numerous questions before and after booking the villa. Marco, the owner, is very accommodating and has done a very tasteful job of converting what was once a barn into a lovely villa. Some of the bedrooms convert to single beds which made the grandkids very happy that they did not have to share. The location is wonderful, being just outside the suburbs of Siena, close to a small town with a grocery store, but isolated enough with great views of the countryside. While always skeptical at the pictures I see on the website, rest assured it is a very good representation of reality. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

“ Great Stay ”

Wonderful location and beautiful Villa. 5 couples stayed comfortably with plenty of space. Place was very clean, updated, and well maintained. Very private. Communication with Marco and invitation to Tuscany was excellent. Would highly recommend!

“ A Wonderful Property ”

We stayed in this home for 3 weeks and enjoyed every minute. Marco, the owner, met us the first day and provided an incredible briefing, along with detailed written information about the house and the local area (his restaurant recommendations are great). The home was clean and neat, and everything in the home worked and made the stay comfortable. Marco kept in contact to ensure there was nothing we needed or lacking in the home.

Marta, the owner of Marta's Cooking Classes, came to the home twice and prepared spectacular meals that were better than any we enjoyed in the many restaurants we visited. We have been to the Siena area three times before, but this property, and Marco and Marta, permitted us to have a completely different experience. For instance, we walked to San Miniato each morning and enjoyed cappuccinos and pastries in the local coffee cafe, which permitted us to meet the local baristas (an experience we also highly recommend).

We cannot recommend Fienile enough.

“ Beautiful villa in gorgeous surroundings ”

Beautiful villa in gorgeous surroundings. Happy place. Lovely pool, al fresco eating, comfortable beds. Lovely decor, spotlessly clean. Marco, the owner, stopped by a couple of times to say hi. I'd highly recommend. Very close to Siena too. Take a cab, not worth the hassle of finding a parking place.

“ A very enjoyable two week stay ”

Great location - 20 mins from easy to access car park in Siena (Il Campo). Supermarket on road by from Siena to villa. Villa - Very clean, great use of space, comfortable furniture inside and out. Pool very clean and large. Lots of places to sit. Shade from the Sun if required at all times of the day. Wifi worked well. Villa well equipped. Air conditioning very cheap (25 Euros for two weeks, used every night). Owner was helpful and responsive. We had a very enjoyable two week stay.

“ The villa is absolutely georgeous ”

This villa is absolutely gorgeous. Ten of us stayed there, ranging in age from 13 years to 59. Plenty of room for all. We didn't spend much time inside because the garden, patio and pool were so beautiful. We ate Italian family style dinners outside in the evening. Adults and kids alike hung out in the pool in until well after dark. The views from this villa are to die for, and the sunsets. We met Marco, the owner a couple of times. He was charming and extremely helpful. Wish I'd booked two weeks instead of one. You can get a taxi into Siena for ten euro, which is better than trying to park there. Can't say enough good things about this comfortable superb property. Loved it!

“ Definitely recommend Fienile to family and friends ”

Fienile had wonderful indoor and outdoor space and was very comfortable for our group of 8. We loved dining outside at night under the canopy next to the pool while sharing our experiences and tasting our newly found Tuscany regional wines. Also, the terrace and garden views were so beautiful and relaxing...we often enjoyed our morning coffee there. The villa kitchen is very well equipped with plenty of glasses, dishes, pots and pans. We enjoy cooking, so we prepared several meals in the kitchen there. Two nights we arranged to have dinner catered...one was a drop-off and the other was an in-house cooking class. We enjoyed a full day private wine tour to Montalcino and another day trip to Antinori Winery. We also spent a few relaxing hours one day at the thermal springs (not sure of name). Of course, Siena itself had so much to offer in the way of shops, restaurants, and beautiful churches and museums. Our favorite restaurant in Siena was Trattoria Papei. On other days, we just drove and discovered small villages with very quaint restaurants for lunch and just enjoyed sitting and "soaking in" the atmosphere. We would definitely recommend Fienile to family and friends and would love to return with our family in a few years. Thanks for your help and information to make this a beautiful and memorable trip.

“ Excellent base to explore this part of Italy ”

The property was delightful, beautifully situated in the peaceful hills with amazing views, yet only a very short drive (10 minutes) to Siena. The property was spacious and very well equipped. Wonderful gardens with terraces, a pool and fabulous views of the surrounding Tuscan countryside. The owner, Marco was most welcoming on arrival, showing us all round the property and ensuring us of his assistance should there have been anything we needed while staying. We enjoyed a brilliant evening when a local family came and cooked an amazing Italian feast for us - absolutely delicious! Plenty of beautiful places within easy striking distance. We would certainly recommend the villa as an excellent base to explore this part of Italy.

“ Very relaxed environment, well appointed spacious villa ”

We stayed at Fienile for a week with extended family (including 3 children between 1-3). Very relaxing environment, well appointed, spacious villa with good facilities (internet (which did drop out a bit)) and decent sized bedrooms and bathrooms. The outdoor area was well used and the pools proximity to the house was important to us with little children running around, the pool isn't fenced and we bough a water alarm for our 17 month old daughter in case she fell in. There is a lovely area for eating meals in-between the pool and the house. The location of the villa is excellent with a supermarket (Co-op) about 1.5 kms away and Siena a 15 minute drive. It is also conveniently located for day trips to other places in Tuscany (San Gimignano, Montepulciano, etc). Marco, the owner was very helpful and responsive to any issues or questions we had.

“ Lovely, very comfortable, clean and well-appointed ”

The house is lovely, very comfortable, clean and well-appointed. The pool is clean, close to the house and a good size for proper swimming as well as playing, though would not be suitable for very small children. The whole outdoor area, seating, dining etc is very well arranged. The owner was extremely helpful, and responded quickly when we had a couple of small issues or queries. The age range of the party was from 7 to 74 and all of us loved it.

“ A wonderful home during our two week stay ”

Il Fienile is a wonderful villa! There are six bedrooms (four double and two single) which were clean and comfortable with lots of wardrobe space, extra pillows, blankets and available plug-ins. There are four bathrooms with showers, 2 also have bidets. Hairdryers are provided as well. The kitchen is spacious with a large refrigerator and five burner gas stove with an electric oven. The kitchen is well-stocked with the cookware necessary to create your own gourmet meals. A stained glass window makes the atmosphere even more special. Three complete sets of china and a wide assortment of stemware are available for dining in the dining room or outside under the covered terrace beside the pool. The gardens are splendid and the pool, complete with a diving rock, is clean. There are lots of lights which allow the deck and gardens to be used after sunset. Access to the gardens is easy from one of two garden doors equipped with screens and shutters. The property, although not far from Siena and other villas, is secluded on a hillside from which the views are fabulous. The overall ambience of this stone house furnished with antiques and semi-precious art work is luxurious. The owner lives near by and is available to answer questions and deal expeditiously with any concerns. The available WiFi worked well but downloading was sometimes slow in the evening. Il Fienile was a wonderful home during our two week stay. It is centrally located for easy access to many Tuscan must-see places like Siena, Montepulcino, Castello di Verrazzano, Lucca and San Gimignano. For an extra special treat, contact Emily at a Tuscan Table (www.atuscantable.com). She can prepare a scrumptious meal for you at the villa.

FAQ about Fienile

1. Walking to San Miniato - what's actually there?

It's a residential suburb (1970s-80s development), not a tourist destination. What matters for guests: pasticceria for morning pastries and coffee, small shops, bus stop to Siena center if you don't want to drive every time. The 10-minute walk gives you access to basic services without needing the car. Not the famous San Miniato truffle town (that's between Florence and Pisa).

2. Is Fienile wheelchair accessible?

Partially, but not to EU standards. A path with ramps connects the lower parking area to the upper accommodation level where the main living spaces and bedrooms are located. Three of the five bedrooms are on the ground floor (all with ensuite bathrooms). The main living area, kitchen, dining area, and terrace/pool access are all on this same ground level. This layout works well for people with mobility issues who can manage gentle ramps and level surfaces. But the ramps and doorways aren't built to official EU wheelchair accessibility standards. So it suits people who can walk with difficulty but can manage gentle ramps and some steps. People who use wheelchairs part-time but can transfer. Elderly guests or those recovering from injuries who need level access to main living areas. Families with members who have mobility concerns but aren't fully wheelchair-dependent.

Where is Fienile ?

  • Closest Bus stop 4 mins drive, or 20 minutes walk

Around Fienile

For all of its country feel Il Fienile is less than five minutes from the nearest coffee bar and market and about ten minutes from the heart of the city.

Torre alle Tolfe (500m walk) is a medieval organic farm estate and historic borgo just outside Siena, overlooking rolling Chianti hills. The Castelli family has owned the property since the 1950s. In 2015, Mania Castelli moved back with her family to manage operations and open the estate to the public with restaurant and guest accommodations. They practice regenerative farming focused on biodiversity and soil health. Ristorante La Torre alle Tolfe offers seasonal menus in Tuscan tradition. "Food miles" measured in meters - vegetables from their organic garden (orto), fresh eggs from their hens, herbs from the property (wild and cultivated). Cheeses and meats from local producers sharing their responsible farming philosophy. Wine list features their own red, white, rosato, and frizzante wines plus small-scale Tuscan producers committed to organic techniques.

San Miniato suburb (10-minute walk) is a neighborhood north of Siena's historic center, developed in the 1970s-80s as part of urban plan by architect Giancarlo De Carlo. Primarily residential, it hosts University of Siena's Scientific Campus (biotechnology, chemistry, pharmacy, life sciences) and Santa Maria alle Scotte Hospital with university hospital departments. For guests: pasticceria for morning pastries and local shopping, bus stop providing connections to Siena historic center. This San Miniato suburb should not be confused with the famous medieval hilltop town of San Miniato between Florence and Pisa (renowned for white truffles).

Siena (12km, 15-20 minutes) needs little introduction. Known today for its Palio horse race and its wonderful shell-shaped piazza Il Campo, the city was once a strong rival to Florence and a stopover must on the Via Francigena trail for pilgrims heading to Rome. That it fell to its adversary and lived in obscurity for centuries is now only a benefit, for its winding streets and striking architecture have survived the ages to delight the modern traveller. The Gothic Duomo (cathedral) features black-and-white marble striping, Piccolomini Library with Pinturicchio frescoes, Nicola Pisano pulpit. Torre del Mangia (102m tower) offers 360-degree views after climbing 400 steps. The city divides into 17 contrade (neighborhoods), each with fierce identity expressed through the Palio. Each contrada has its own museo di contrada displaying winning Palio banners (hand-painted silk drapes representing Virgin Mary and Siena symbols, created by famous artists including Fernando Botero, Renato Guttuso, Sandro Chia, Igor Mitoraj), medieval costumes (montature) worn in historical procession, sacred art, flags, drums, reliquaries. The museums usually require local connections to arrange visits - your owner can help organize these private cultural experiences. Parking outside the walls at Fortezza Medicea, Santa Caterina, or other car parks, then walk into the historic center (ZTL restricted zone). Siena rewards slow exploration: wander the medieval streets radiating from the Campo, discover hidden churches, find authentic trattorias away from the tourist zones. The Pinacoteca Nazionale holds Sienese school paintings (Duccio, Simone Martini, Ambrogio Lorenzetti). Santa Maria della Scala museum (former hospital) contains frescoes and archaeological collections.

Chianti region (surrounding area) - you're positioned in the heart of Chianti wine country between Florence and Siena. Rolling hills covered in vineyards, olive groves, cypresses, oak forests. The SS222 (Chiantigiana road) winds from Florence to Siena through quintessential Tuscan landscape. Chianti Classico wine zone includes Castellina in Chianti (medieval village, Etruscan tombs), Greve in Chianti (triangular market square, Saturday morning market, wine shops), Radda in Chianti (concentric medieval streets, Palazzo del Podestà), Gaiole in Chianti (castle routes, Brolio Castle), Panzano (Dario Cecchini's legendary butcher shop). Wine estates offer tastings and tours - Badia a Passignano (medieval monastery, Antinori estate), Badia a Coltibuono (monastery turned wine estate), Castello di Volpaia (medieval hamlet-castle converted to winery) and plenty more.

San Gimignano (45km northwest, 50 minutes) - the "medieval Manhattan" with 14 surviving towers (originally 72). UNESCO World Heritage Site. Piazza della Cisterna and Piazza del Duomo, Collegiata church with frescoes, Torre Grossa (tallest tower, climbable for views), Vernaccia di San Gimignano white wine. Very touristy but worth visiting, especially early morning or late afternoon when day-trippers leave. Park outside walls.

Monteriggioni (20km north, 25 minutes) - perfectly preserved circular medieval walls with 14 watchtowers (originally 15). Built 1213-1219 by Republic of Siena as defensive outpost against Florence. Dante mentioned it in the Inferno. Small central piazza, church of Santa Maria Assunta, few shops and restaurants. Walk the walls for views over Chianti countryside. Quick visit (1-2 hours) but photogenic and atmospheric.

Val d'Orcia (50km south, 1 hour) - UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape of rolling hills, cypress-lined roads, medieval hilltop towns. Pienza (Pope Pius II's ideal Renaissance town, Pecorino cheese), Montalcino (Brunello wine, imposing fortress), San Quirico d'Orcia (Horti Leonini gardens, Collegiata church), Bagno Vignoni (thermal springs in the piazza). Classic Tuscan postcard scenery. Allow full day for proper exploration.

Florence (70km north, 1 hour) - Uffizi Gallery (book months ahead), Accademia (Michelangelo's David, book ahead), Duomo complex (Brunelleschi's dome, Giotto's campanile, Baptistery doors), Ponte Vecchio, San Lorenzo markets, Santa Croce (Michelangelo/Galileo tombs), countless churches with Renaissance art. Park at edge (Villa Costanza park-and-ride, then tram) or train from Siena (1 hour 30 minutes). Overwhelming in summer - shoulder seasons better.

Volterra (60km southwest, 1 hour 15 minutes) - dramatic hilltop Etruscan and Roman town, massive walls, Etruscan Museum with funerary urns, Roman theater and baths, alabaster workshops, Medici fortress. Less touristy than San Gimignano, authentic working town character. Twilight (New Moon movie) filming location if that matters to anyone in your group.

Arezzo (70km east, 1 hour) - Piero della Francesca frescoes in San Francesco church (Legend of the True Cross cycle - booking essential), sloping Piazza Grande (monthly antiques market first weekend), Vasari Loggia, Roman amphitheater. Less visited than Florence/Siena but art-historically significant.
