Villa Cicogna stands at the end of a ridge-top village near Arezzo, a former wine estate palazzo with commanding views over the Valdarnese hills. The house is built on an impressive scale - massive buttressed walls support a vast paved terrace above ancient wine cellars, while tall windows flood the upstairs living spaces with light.
The layout follows the traditional piano nobile design: all living space is on the first floor, with five large bedrooms, an airy living room, and a simple kitchen opening onto long views of cypress-dotted valleys. Downstairs, a stone-flagged games room leads directly to the terrace. Outside, the terrace is the heart of the house - a generous paved space with a 5-metre pool, gazebo for outdoor dining, and a barbecue. In the evenings, the remote location delivers exceptional dark skies.
The village has a shop and restaurant within walking distance. Arezzo is 30 minutes by car, Florence and Siena an hour. For car-free exploring, Montevarchi station is 15 minutes away with direct trains to Florence.
Villa Cicogna is listed under the following categories:
Enter through double doors into a tall entrance hall. To the left, the games room opens onto the terrace and pool.
Upstairs, the kitchen is functional rather than fancy - perfect for holiday cooking with an oven, fridge, and coffee maker. The living room has comfortable seating, WiFi, and a flatscreen TV.
Five bedrooms run along a corridor - one twin, three kings, and one super king - with three bathrooms serving the floor. A fourth bathroom with washing machine sits on the half-landing.
Every room looks out over the valley.
On the large terrace there is a pool, a gazebo with table and chairs for outdoor dining, and a barbecue. Underneath the terrace tie the vast winemaking cellars, now no longer in use but once the engine of this important home and its estate; you may ask the owners if you'd like to see the cellars, but they're not normally open to visitors.
The village has a small shop within walking distance, while just below the village there is a restaurant, also within walking distance. Further afield, the house is ideally placed to explore the villages of the valdarno, the vineyards of Chianti and the art cities of Tuscany.
Arezzo is half an hour's drive away, Florence under an hour, Siena and Cortona an hour. If you'd prefer to explore Tuscany by train, there is convenient train station 15 min drive away in Montevarchi.
