Villa di Monterchi is an imposing stone palazzo that dates back to 1785, with bedrooms and lounge rooms decorated by a famous local artist, Luigi Puletti, a precursor of Liberty style. Surrounded by 25 hectars of a private park with secular oaks, cypresses and pine trees, the villa has a private swimming pool as well as an external Jacuzzi available on request.
A one hectare rose garden surrounds the villa. On one side there is a pergola with fragrant moscatello and canaiolo grapes used in the production of holy wine. Villa di Monterchi is a luxurious Tuscan villa 5 minutes drive from the village of Monterchi, where the Italian Renaissance master Piero della Francesca painted one of his most famous frescoes, “La Madonna del Parto”, in the 14th century, held in the Museum of Monterchi.
The location is also ideal for reaching the cities and towns in Umbria, the shores of Tuscany's 'inland sea' Lake Trasimeno and the splendid Tuscan art cities of Cortona and Arezzo.
One of the 12 most important Etruscan cities, Arezzo remained prominent in Roman times for its fine pottery and important throughout the Middle Ages thanks to powerful bishops and its artisans who excelled in goldsmithing and textiles.
Piero della Francesca, the painter of the pregnant madonna, is perhaps best known for his series of frescoes that capture the city's history, scenes of which are easily imagined in the city's beautiful Piazza Grande. Arezzo hosts both the Saracen Joust in late June and early September as well as monthly Antiquarian Fairs that fill the streets with fascinating pickings.
Excellent access to major motorways and delightful country roads also place the ancient cities of Siena and Florence within easy reach, but what a pleasure to know that a quiet terrace and a hilltop view await your return.
