In the rolling hills of the Val d'Orcia, south of Siena, there's a tiny fortified village called Castelmuzio of Etruscan origins. On the very edge of the village you'll find Villa Castelmuzio, a beautifully restored villa with private gardens and a pool. The three-story villa is divided into three apartments but the house is best taken as a unit, with spaces for everybody to get together but also places for a little privacy and time alone.
The gardens stretch along a ridge at the same height as the village, looking out on beautiful views South and South-West towards Pienza and San Quirico d'Orcia. The pool enjoys the same views and just beyond the pool and small copse of pine trees provides a welcome place of shade.
The village is tiny but has a couple of restaurants, a grocery store and even a little museum with some excellent work: a Madonna and Child from the school of Duccio di Boninsegna, paintings from the schools of Beccafumi, Domenico Manetti, and Sano di Pietro. On the nearby hills you'll find more villages, monasteries and historic sights, all worth visiting and enjoying, interspersed with excellent restaurants and cafes.
Villa Castelmuzio is listed under the following categories:
The ground-floor is decorated with natural tones, the décor taking its cue from the colours of the olive tree - muted greens, warm neutrals, and solid wood throughout. The open-plan living area has plenty of space for everybody to hangout together, as well as a small wine bar corner; the kitchen is well equipped with a substantial island that works well for informal cooking sessions. Outside, a private patio with a lounge area and dining table connects directly to the pool and sun loungers. There are three bedrooms on this floor.
On the first-floor you'll find large windows and amazing views across the hills of the Val d'Orcia. The open-plan living and kitchen area is generous on this floor too, with an antique dining table that seats 12. There are a further three bedrooms, each with an ensuite; the main bedroom also has a private study and balcony, the second has a walk-in wardrobe. A separate service bathroom completes the layout. Sunsets from the large windows on this floor are worth staying in for.
The top-floor is striking, with enormous exposed wooden beams and illuminated by skylights throughout, providing good natural light during the day, and wonderful views of the night sky after dark. Three bedrooms and two bathrooms.
Outside the villa has beautiful furnished gardens, divided into various sections for different moments. There are shaded areas near the house for al fresco dining, as well as a small circular pool perfect for a dip while chatting with everybody. Keen swimmers can head to the end of the garden where they'll find a good sized pool with wonderful views of the Val d'Orcia. Beyond this a copse of pine trees provides welcome shade and is also a great place to relax at night, with the starred Tuscan night sky above you.
Castelmuzio is a small but historic village; first mentioned in the 9th century it is undoubtedly much older, with traces of an ancient temple found nearby. It was perfectly placed for defence, built on an old volcanic tufa plug, a position beloved by the Etruscans for defence and for the ease with which tunnels and tombs could be carved into the soft rock.
Today it is a small village rich in history, with the remains of its past as a fortified castle still easy to trace in the medieval walls, stone gate and watch tower. It has a small museum, as well as a cafe/bar, two restaurants and a small coop store, enough to ensure to don't have to get in your car unless you're off to explore the countryside.
Nearby Montisi is a special village with a great atmosphere and some lovely restaurants, like "L'Ombelico del Mondo". I've spent some lovely times in Montisi, including coming for the Giostra di Simone, an annual medieval jousting tournament held on the first weekend of August (the Sunday closest to the August 5th Feast of Madonna delle Nevi). The four local districts - Castello, Piazza, San Martino, and Torre - each field a rider in an equestrian tournament where competitors gallop past a target bearing the image of the medieval tyrant Simone Cacciaconti and attempt to spear a suspended ring with a lance. The event is preceded by a colourful procession of participants in full medieval dress and some great meals in the village along enormous tables laid along the street.
When you do explore, you'll find that you're surrounded by all sorts of delights, from hilltop towns like Pienza, Montisi, Montepulciano and Montalcino, to the famous art cities like Siena, Arezzo and Florence.
There are thermal baths nearby, in Bagno Vignoni, San Casciano, and Rapolano Terme, as well as wineries, museums and wild swimming galore. This is the perfect base for exploring Tuscany, as well as nearby Umbria with Lake Trasimeno and Perugia within an hour's drive.
