Villa Bonazza (locally known as Villa del Sole) has a 650 square meter wellness center. Most villas call a hot tub a spa; this is a heated hydromassage pool with waterfall features, a sauna, an automatic Shiatsu massage bed, a gym, showers, and changing rooms - the kind of facility you'd find at a resort hotel, but private to your group. For a villa sleeping 20, that changes the nature of the holiday entirely.
The main villa accommodates 18 across multiple floors - beamed ceilings, brick archways, stone floors, all the expected Chianti architecture but recently restored with modern conveniences throughout. The ground floor has a striking lounge with high archways and a Tuscan fireplace, a second lounge, a fully equipped kitchen for 20, and La Casetta Suite (sitting room, kitchen, double bedroom with ensuite). Upstairs, seven double bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, air conditioning, and satellite TV - one with a large balcony, another with a mezzanine level.
The converted barn sits adjacent to the main villa: a 150 square meter apartment with its own lounge, fireplace, kitchen, and two bedrooms sharing a bathroom. This works well for groups wanting both connection and separation - multi-generational families, or friends who value having their own space.
Outside, an 8x16 meter pool (unusually large) with hydromassage jets and waterfall fountains, an outdoor jacuzzi, ping pong table, and furnished areas for outdoor dining. The property sits within Chianti vineyards - wine estates and medieval towns within 30 minutes, Florence and Siena both an hour.
Bonazza is listed under the following categories:
MAIN VILLA (sleeps 18):
Lower floor (650 sq m): Wellness center with heated hydromassage pool, sauna, automatic Shiatsu massage bed, gym, two showers, changing room. Exclusively for guests. Massages and beauty treatments available on request.
Ground floor: Main lounge with fireplace, distinctive second lounge with cotto flooring and stone walls, fully equipped kitchen for 20 (stove, fridge, dishwasher, washing machine), spacious dining room, outdoor access to furnished pergola and barbecue area. La Casetta Suite: sitting room with fireplace, kitchenette, double bedroom with ensuite shower, air conditioning, insect screens.
First floor: Seven double bedrooms, all ensuite with showers (six queen-size 170x190cm, one twin/double 85x180cm convertible). One bedroom has a large private balcony, another includes a mezzanine level. All rooms have air conditioning, satellite TV, wifi, insect screens, and safe. Large lounge with fireplace and sofas.
BARN ANNEX (sleeps 2): 150 square meter converted barn adjacent to main villa. Lounge with fireplace and TV, fully equipped kitchen (stove, fridge, washing machine, dishwasher), one double bedroom and one twin bedroom sharing a bathroom with both shower and bathtub. Hand-painted bathroom tiles, antique furniture, air conditioning throughout.
OUTDOORS:
8m x 16m swimming pool (0.2m-3m depth, fenced) with hydromassage jets and waterfall features, open March 25 - October 20. Outdoor jacuzzi (not heated). Ping pong table. Furnished pergola for outdoor dining, barbecue. Gated property with parking.
For 17-20 guests: the main villa plus the barn annex (both kitchens, all 10 bedrooms). For 16 or fewer: main villa only (18 capacity), annex stays closed. Confirm your configuration when booking to avoid confusion at check-in.
Yes. The 650 square meter spa area (heated hydromassage pool, sauna, Shiatsu massage bed, gym) is indoors and available throughout your stay. The outdoor jacuzzi is not heated.
All bedrooms are air-conditioned. AC costs €500/week extra, and heating costs another €500/week in winter. Both are worth it - this is a large property, and Chianti summers get hot.
Tavarnelle Val di Pesa is 5 minutes by car (2km) - supermarket, restaurants, Saturday morning market. You'll want a car; it's technically walkable, but not practical with shopping. If you're not carrying groceries, it's a lovely walk - it's a quiet road and the views are great. There's even a little bench under a cypress tree at a particularly good spot.
Ristorante Al Macereto in San Donato Val di Pesa gets consistent praise. La Fornace is also very popular, a Pizzeria in Tavarnelle that's under 2km away, so some walk there. Ask Virginia for current recommendations when you arrive - she knows the area intimately. (We also send out a list of recommended local places when you have booked).
Yes. Virginia and her team can arrange cooking classes at the villa, private chef dinners, wine tastings, and other services. Book before arrival - availability fills up in high season.
Virginia typically provides local olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and cured meats. It's a genuine welcome, not a token gesture.
Multiple levels in the main villa with stairs required to reach first-floor bedrooms. The ground floor has La Casetta Suite (bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, sitting room) accessible without stairs. Not fully wheelchair accessible, but the ground-floor suite offers limited-mobility options. Ask us if you're considering it, and we can discuss specific circumstances.
We often change villa names. Sometimes it's because we already have a villa with the same name - there are only so many variations on "Colombaia" or "Casolare" one can have without confusion. Other times it's preference. We like Bonazza because it refers to the road where the villa is, while "Sole del Chianti" sounded a little too similar to others in our portfolio. It's the same property; you'll see reviews and references under Villa Sole del Chianti on other platforms.
Villa Bonazza sits in the Chianti hills between Florence and Siena, 5 minutes from Tavarnelle Val di Pesa for shops and services, with the medieval triangle of Certaldo, San Gimignano, and Volterra all within 30-60 minutes.
Tavarnelle Val di Pesa (5 mins): Small market town with supermarkets, restaurants, and services. The village holds a market on Saturday mornings - useful for stocking the villa at the start of the week.
San Gimignano (30 mins): The UNESCO-listed medieval town of towers - 14 survive from an original 72. The Piazza della Cisterna is one of Tuscany's most photographed squares. Vernaccia di San Gimignano is the local white wine (the only white DOCG in Tuscany). Gelateria Dondoli on the piazza has won world championships. In summer, book restaurants ahead - the town gets crowded.
Certaldo (30 mins): Birthplace of Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375), who wrote the Decameron here. The upper town (Certaldo Alto) is reached by funicular - medieval streets, Palazzo Pretorio with frescoes, Casa Boccaccio museum. Much quieter than San Gimignano, with several good restaurants. The Mercato Medievale in September recreates a 14th century market.
Chianti Wine Country (20-40 mins): The villa sits within Chianti Classico territory (the black rooster zone). Badia a Passignano (20 mins) is an 11th century monastery now owned by Antinori - both wine tastings and restaurant bookable. Greve in Chianti (30 mins) is the main market town with the Enoteca Falorni on the piazza. The Chiantigiana road (SR222) winds through the entire zone.
Volterra (1 hour):
Etruscan city on a dramatic hilltop - the Museo Etrusco Guarnacci has one of Italy's finest Etruscan collections. Alabaster workshops throughout the town (Volterra has worked alabaster for 2500 years). The Roman theater sits just outside the walls. Truffle restaurants in autumn. Park outside the walls and walk in.
Florence (1 hour by car / 30-35 mins by train):
Uffizi and Accademia require advance booking in high season (book 2-3 months ahead for summer). The train from Poggibonsi-San Gimignano station (15 km, 23 mins from the villa) reaches Florence SMN in 30-35 minutes - strongly recommended over driving, as parking is expensive and difficult. The Oltrarno neighbourhood (across the river) has better restaurants and fewer crowds than the historic center.
Siena (1 hour):
Gothic architecture rather than Renaissance. The Duomo is extraordinary (striped marble interior, Piccolomini Library frescoes, inlaid marble floors). The Palio horse race around Piazza del Campo runs July 2 and August 16 - book accommodations a year ahead if you want to attend. The Torre del Mangia offers views over the entire city and surrounding countryside.
Airports: Florence (Peretola) is 40km (40 mins), Pisa (Galileo Galilei) is 82km (1 hour 10 mins). Pisa has more international connections, but both work well for this location.
