You will see Villa Lucia from the valley road that winds its way towards Siena, following the old pilgrim and trade route to Rome; a proud formal facade framed by trees high above the road on the hills of Chianti, its tall windows framed in the local sandstone.
While its core is medieval, the villa was extensively extended and embellished in the 18th century and now is a large and elegant villa for 14 guests, with a private pool in secure grounds. Stepping into the villa feels like going back into a more elegant era, with polished marble floors, antique furniture and tall stateroom windows overlooking the magical Tuscan landscape.
The villa's position is perfect for exploring Tuscany with Siena twenty minutes to the south, Florence half an hour north and the wine region of Chianti to the east. The famous medieval city of San Gimignano is close by too, and the region is rich with hilltop villages and excellent restaurants.
This is an excellent choice for a family reunion, with plenty to see and do in the area, while for those days when you'd prefer to stay at the villa, there are plenty of activities that can be organised.
Villa Lucia is listed under the following categories:
The front door to the villa is central and formal, and leads into an elegant entrance-room. On the right you'll find a large living room as well as an en-suite double bedroom with a beautiful fireplace in green marble. On the left is a dining room and a kitchen, well-equipped for self-catering but also used by local chefs when required to provide guests with breakfast, catered meals or cooking lessons. There is a service WC by the kitchen.
From the entrance room wide stone stairs lead upstairs to a large living room and 6 bedrooms, all air-conditoned. Four are ensuite doubles, while two are twin bedrooms that share a bathroom. A balcony a the front of the house has wonderful views of the medieval walled village of Monteriggioni.
The pool area is at the back of the villa, reached from the kitchen or through the pines of the villa's small park. There are sun umbrellas, seating and a ping pong table arranged around the pool.
Though the village is close by, the path goes onto a narrow main road and we wouldn't recommend walking into the village. There is a slightly longer way, ask us if you'd like more details.
The house is reached along around 500m of gravel track, with a couple of switchback corners to reach the villa. It's well-maintained and not too narrow.
The closest village to Villa Lucia is Staggia Senese, just at the bottom of the hill. It has shops, an ATM, supermarket and restaurants and is only a couple of kms away. It is possible to walk into the town but the return walk will be steep as the Villa is on a hill.
The famous fortified village of Monteriggioni is close by; it's a delight to explore and holds a yearly 'medieval festival' when the entire village becomes medieval, with events and re-enactments. Chianti is also close by, with famous wineries and beautiful historic towns.
A few kilometers south is the beautiful medieval city of Siena. Known in present times for its Palio horse race and its wonderful shell-shaped piazza Il Campo, Siena was once a strong rival to Florence and a stopover must on the Via Francigena trail for pilgrims heading to Rome. That it fell to its adversary and lived in obscurity for centuries is now only a benefit, for its winding streets and striking architecture have survived the ages to delight the modern traveller. Whether you spend hours exploring the city centre, follow the Chiantigiana out to the wine hills, or simply linger by the pool, this corner of Tuscany is guaranteed to please.
Florence, Arezzo and Pisa are all easy to visit from the beautiful villa.
